Movement is not optional for health after 40. But the type, volume, and intensity of movement that supports health changes significantly across the decades.

Sarcopenia, the gradual loss of muscle mass that begins in the 30s and accelerates after 50, is one of the most consequential physiological changes associated with aging. It affects strength, balance, metabolic rate, and functional capacity. The research is clear that resistance-based movement can slow this process. Less clear, and more nuanced, is how that movement should be structured for people in midlife.

Joint health is a separate but related concern. Cartilage does not regenerate the way muscle tissue does. Loading patterns that work well for younger joints can accelerate wear in older ones. The research suggests that older adults may need more dietary protein per kilogram of body weight than younger adults to achieve the same muscle protein synthesis response, and that the distribution of protein across meals may matter more than it does at younger ages.

Insulin sensitivity tends to decline with age, particularly in the context of reduced physical activity and increased adiposity. This affects how the body partitions energy from carbohydrates and has implications for both body composition and energy levels throughout the day.

Bone mineral density, which peaks in the late 20s and declines thereafter, is influenced by calcium and vitamin D intake, among other factors. The physiology of aging creates a situation where the body's tolerance for high-intensity training stress is reduced while the importance of maintaining movement is, if anything, increased. This is not a contradiction. It is an argument for a different approach to what "effective" exercise looks like.

Behavioral research on habit formation suggests that lower-intensity activities performed consistently are more likely to become durable habits than high-intensity activities that require significant motivation and recovery time. The body adapts to what it does regularly, not to what it does occasionally and intensely.
